As September ushers in the “Quality Month”, Cambodia is in the midst of the rainy season. The vital electrical equipment for the Sihanoukville project, undertaken by China Machine-Building International Corporation (CMIC), has been safely transported. It marked a significant milestone for the project. The meticulous logistic management efforts of the project team laid a solid foundation for the upcoming installation and commissioning of electrical equipment.
The Development of Grid Substation and Transmission Line Project in Sihanouk Ville (Sihanoukville Project) contains six sub-projects, including the construction of new GIS substations, expansion of existing substations, high-voltage lines, and underground cables. It involves multiple material sites, covering almost all types of professions in the power transmission and transformation industry. The team had to navigate through the challenges posed by the extreme weather during the rainy season in Sihanoukville and the impact of the severe local COVID-19 epidemic. Therefore, the logistic management had been a crucial aspect in ensuring the timely completion of the project.
Once receiving notification of ‘ready for shipment’ from the main transformer’s manufacturer, the project team promptly convened a meeting to discuss the transportation details. They confirmed the shipping list and packaging methods to ensure the safe transportation of the main transformer and its accessories over the long distance by sea.
The main transformer has arrived safely at the pier and is ready to be shipped to the site.
Each main transformer weighs approximately 70 tons, and the positioning accuracy needs to be strictly controlled within 2mm. Additionally, due to spatial constraints within the indoor layout, it was not possible to use a crane for the entire installation process, which increased the complexity of the task.

To ensure the safe installation of the main transformers, the project team collaborated closely with the manufacturer and transportation company. They conducted site surveys, confirmed the transportation route, removed any obstructions, and smoothed out the roadways. They also made meticulous preparations at the construction site to ensure the smooth execution of each step. Ultimately, they successfully completed the installation process. Currently, two new 115kV GIS substations with four main transformers have been successfully installed, marking a significant milestone for the project.

Throughout the project, quality management has always been a critical element, ensuring the safety and reliability of equipment operation. The Sihanoukville project team will continue to adhere to the Quality Management Manual and strengthen transportation quality management execution. They will leverage their team’s expertise to ensure production safety and focus on project quality, to complete the project on schedule by the end of 2021 and deliver a satisfactory outcome to the project owner.
